The story said

The current Australian government policies are insufficient at stopping the influx of asylum seekers arriving via boat, especially as an increase is predicted before Asia’s wet season. This has been shown through the rising numbers of asylum seekers in detention since Julia Gillard became PM, as well as the number of people arriving in each boat, jumping from 50 to 70 in the past year. The opposition claims that due to Government policy failure in the area of border protection, illegal boats will continue to arrive and create problems in the centres that are already overcrowded.

Did you know

It is a misconception that Australia is overwhelmed by asylum seekers; in fact the number of boats has decreased by half compared to last year. Furthermore, Australia’s refugee intake represents approximately 7% of our total migration intake each year. Increases of numbers in detention facilities in Australia would not be a concern if government allowed all asylum seekers to live in the community once health and security checks were completed. The current government policies are no the reason why people get on the boats in the first place. Asylum seekers flee their countries to escape violence, terror, persecution and war. The key to stopping boats is not a policy change, but working towards long term human rights improvements around the world.
