Abbott's boat policy bad joke

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott’s flawed “Indonesia solution”, which would see a future Coalition government ordering the Royal Australian Navy to turn back suspected refugee boats from Indonesia, has been widely condemned. Not only would this policy be detrimental to Australian-Indonesian relations and the Australian Defence Force, as such a plan would put RAN personnel and asylum seekers at serious risk. If lessons are to be learned from the Howard government’s blockade against boat people from 2001, Australian political leaders cannot afford to insult the Indonesian government. Moreover, the exuberate costs attached to enforcing the blockade, proved the policy was highly inefficient, as it did not address the issue of people-smuggling, and more importantly, failed to improve processing asylum seekers within the region.

Did you know

The risk of endangering Australian Defence Force personnel and asylum seekers is real. In April 2009, SIEV 36 was intercepted by HMAS Childers and Albany. After attempts to turn SIEV 36 back to Indonesia failed, the ADF were forced to take control of the boat for several days. Following growing agitation from desperate asylum seekers, one of the passesngers ignited the fuel, resulting in the vessel exploding. This tragedy led to five Afghan asylum seekers being killed, and ADF crew were placed at serious risk. Furthermore, according to the coroner’s inquest, had it not been for prompt action by her crewmates, a ADF personnel would have drown at sea.
