Boats arrive as politicians await experts

The story said

Six weeks ago in June, three respected Australians were commissioned to report to the federal government to recommend policy solutions regarding asylum seekers. The expert panel of three, Angus Houston, Paris Aristotle and Michael L’Estrange are to advise the government on ‘’how best to prevent asylum seekers risking their lives by travelling to Australia by boat’‘. Politicians have outlined their positions on the panel’s report which is to be released on Monday. While Labor has been willing to have its policies scrutinised by experts, the opposition has no intention to budge. Chris Bowen, Immigration Minister says “I think it takes a particular style of arrogance to reject the recommendations of three expert, eminent Australians before you have even seen them”. The Australian Greens said they will take the recommendations to their party room before making a decision. Immigration spokeswoman Sarah Hanson-Young said "Any recommendation to amend the Migration Act to make it worse for refugees, to hurt refugees, the Greens cannot accept”. Senator Hanson-Young says she hopes the experts will inject honesty and reality into the debate and "Give politicians the opportunity to respond in a way that will help protect people … and not get dragged into an ’anywhere but here’ mentality". Three more boats carrying asylum seekers were intercepted by authorities near the Cocos and Ashmore islands over the weekend.
