Canberra settles after destroying refugee boat

The story said
Van Tol Tran has been financially compensated for the government’s illegal destruction of his Vietnamese fishing boat that was used to bring 53 asylum seekers to Australia in 2003.
The captain of the boat was earlier acquitted of any people smuggling charges after courts found that he had captained the boat to save family members and other Vietnamese who were at risk due to their membership of an anti-communist group.
Did you know?
It is legal to seek asylum in Australia, even when arriving by boat. And while many people smugglers do take advantage of desperate people and profit from their need for safety, this story illustrates that this is not always the case.
It is important that each case of asylum seeking and each case of people smuggling is judged on the individual circumstances.
