The story said

In light of the recent tragedy this weekend, in which a boat carrying 200 asylum seekers sunk off the coast of Java. Politicians have once again turned to offshore processing in order to provide a “soloution” to the problem of people smuggling. They argue that if Australia were to have offshore processing, deaths such as these, and those in October, would not take place. Though the best soulution to end the business of people smuggling is for Australia to increase its intake in refugeess, to Minister Bowen’s proposed 20,000 a year, from refugee camps in neighbouring countries.

Did you know

Asylum seekers are forced to turn to people smugglers because there are no viable alternatives in which they can seek protection from persectution. In order to move forward, the government should be addressing our low intake of refugees, as well as encourging neighbouring countries to provide adequate proctection to asylum seekers. If Australia were to increase its refugee intake to 20,000 we would still be unable to fill one fifth of the MCG.
