Leader slams Gillard's Malaysia Plan

The story said
Malaysian opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, has harshly critisized the Gillard governments proposed plan to send refugees to Malaysia to be processed, citing Malaysia’s notorious treatment offoreign labour and illegal immigrants in the country. Ibrahim is quoted as saying ‘’Have you forgotten and thrown the whole principle of the rule of law [and] constitutional rights to the sea?’’

The Malaysian government does not currently differentiate between refugees, asylum seekers, trafficking victims and undocumnted migrants. Resulting in recognized refugees and asylum seekers not being protected under International Refugee law. Currently Malaysia is host to 90,000 refugees and asylum seeekers, Australia on the other hand recives just over 8,000 refugees a year. In 2009 8,427 peope sought asylum in Australia.
