Someone said

In Australia for discussions with the government and opposition, the UN’s High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres stated that the asylum seeker debate is highly inflated. To put it into perspective, Mr. Guterres argued that Australia receives a relatively small number of asylum seekers compared to the rest of the world. According to the UNHCR, Australia should process all asylum seekers onshore, with detention being the exception not the rule. Moreover, Mr. Guterres has criticised the opposition’s proposal of turning boats back, declaring that such “pushbacks” would be in violation of the Refugee Convention. Instead the High Commissioner for Refugees has called for more cooperation within the region regarding asylum seekers.

Did you know

That while only 6000 asylum seekers arrived in Australia last year, Italy and Malta received 58,000 and Yemen 100,000 people. The way forward is for Australia to process asylum seekers that have passed all the necessary health, security and identity check in the community.
