The story said

The Australian Government believes that without the Malaysia solution, the number of asylum seekers arriving by boat will increase to around 600 per month, overwhelming the detention centers and forcing asylum seekers out in the community. This will create racial tension and unrest in the community similar to that in London and Paris. The Migration Act and the Guardianship Act need to be revised and amended to include offshore processing. The government believes that many families send their young ones on boats in the hope that they will sponsor their families’ resettlement in the future.

Did you know

The belief that Australia is overwhelmed by asylum seekers is a misconception. The number of boats carrying asylum seekers have decreased by half compared to last year. Also, compared to other similar countries such as France and Canada, Australia’s refugee intake is minuscule. It is unrealistic to think that an extra 600 per month will create social unrest similar to the London riots, especially when Australia has a proud history of multiculturalism and a immigration program that accepts around 200,000 people from around the world.
Detention facilities in Australia would not be overcrowded if the government allowed all asylum seekers to live in the community once health and security checks were completed
