Imagine being forced to leave what’s familiar – your home and your loved ones. Imagine if your only hope of protection and safety was to get on a boat and risk your life. Imagine if to save your family, you had no choice but to say goodbye.

When you know what asylum seekers have been through (and you know that those who arrive by boat are not ‘illegal’), it’s impossible not to respond to their plight.

So let’s think again, and reject the myths and misconceptions that have dominated the asylum seeker and refugee debate in Australia. It’s time for a fairer approach to protecting people who are fleeing for their lives.
